The arrival of The Journal of the Masonic Society changed much of that. It was thrilling for me to see brethren come to our kiosk at Masonic Week to sign up for membership; to see brethren reading The Journal while relaxing in the hotel lobby.
I declined as graciously as I could given the shock I felt. I was committed resolutely to the Masonic Society and to building something new that was urgently needed in the Craft.
They wound up hiring away another key Masonic Society figure, and he has been doing a wonderful job with that academic quarterly.
There is no rule and guide for presiding over a modestly sized non-profit group in the Masonic world. Worshipful Masters have their rituals, lodge bylaws, grand lodge constitutions, and generations of accreted traditions, habits, and preferences.
Presidents of the Masonic Society? Not so much. Keeps us on our toes. Ask your cousin if they would accept "Satan's wishes to America" as an alternative.
If not, then "God bless America" violates the Establishment Clause. Last edited by Canadian Skeptic on Tue Feb 17, pm, edited 1 time in total.
You seem to agree with me about the issues of sincerity and goodness and the point that we don't know what is in the heart of the Christian student.
So I can't figure out what you don't agree with. You start out misinterpreting the law. I agree it is somewhat arbitrary and bureaucratic, but that's how law works sometimes.
We can't make an exception for one kid who we all know is great, even if everyone in whole USA agrees it's fine.
We can't because how could we test for it? How do we know he's sincere? That's the point of the analogy. In the rest of the world, we can answer that question, we have degrees and licenses and certifications.
Religion wants a pass, a magic badge you get simply by saying you are a good Christian. None of us know that is the case and no amount of arguing can prove the wiser.
You have to test it in practice at the school. You have to actually determine if the announcer means what your cousin means or not. It is possible that the announcer is very religious and believes he has a right to say it.
Then he wouldn't be lying and your cousin's kinder interpretation is wrong. Also, what is considered religious or not has to be politically defined and adapt in different times.
They tend to have lower I. Those with lower time preferences tend to invest in the future, have higher I. I think that, in light of the link between language and consciousness, one could reasonably expect those of more primitive language to also possess lower degrees of consciousness.
We could venture to say that language and metaphor are the parents of invention and progress which are the trappings of civilization. Languages of the Middle East, the cradle of Western civilization, are rich in metaphor and laden with symbolism that goes back thousands of years.
I suspect the same could be said for far Eastern languages, also a cradle of early civilization. Then there are vast areas, inhabited by Humans for eons, where nothing of consequence was ever invented.
The languages of those areas seem to have no words for abstract concepts. It doesn't seem much of a stretch to say that natives of those lands speakers of those languages would experience consciousness at different levels than those among whom advanced language is more ingrained.
Could it be that the transition, among those peoples and their descendants takes generations - during which time, time preferences remain high?
Might this also help explain high crime rates among such people? An interesting and near universal human condition is the refusal, or inability, to accept objective reality by political extremist.
The acceptance of dogma by the religious right is well known and the belief in Utopian nonsense by the far left is also well known. These departures from reality do not seem related to IQ or any of the other possible causes for differences in consciousness.
When attempting discussion with an extremest the quality of their thinking process brings into question their level of consciousness.
The idea of being "present-oriented" could come into play as they do seem to think with a limited range of possible future outcomes. If a break down in the bicameral mind would promote consciousness wouldn't a break down in the extreme ideological positions act in a similar way?
The illogical reasoning, if you can call it reasoning, of the religious Right seems just as disassociated from objective reality as the far Left with their beliefs in utopian nonsense.
You can shorten this with the saying "Put yourself on their shoes" 3. If you get enganged in a discussion, you're allowed to use rethorical tools.
An insult is just an insult. If you use sarcasm, for instance, that's just a way of getting across a point, by highlighting some truth, or exposing the ridiculousness of a position and it can only be effective if it's supporting something thruth.
And that is by definition. If one can't handle sarcasm and fells insulted, then perhaps he shouldn't have engaged in debate.
I'm never insulting, never sarcastic, never take the piss, never demean, and never tell the truth.
Works every time. But it still fails. It is like you feel that you are walking on eggs around some people and are forced to be unusually too careful.
I think this happens to many of us here and why I raised the topic. As an analogy, I feel it is like how some schools ban any peanut products for the sake of one potential person who might have an allergy to it.
Other people can find anything you say insulting. You can control your own intent and mean no insult, but to no avail. You can dance around a subject in an attempt to avoid letting the listener feel insulted, but then you're being dishonest about your message.
If you say nothing where you think you should say something, your silence becomes your message. Either choose to speak your opinion and risk offending, or keep silent and allow your silence to lie about what you want your message to be.
That's why I like to be blunt. Use as few words as possible to get your point across. It gives them fewer words to misconstrue.
You entire life is devoted to interrupting other people's posts on this forum, regardless of the topic, to tell them what's wrong with them.
The irony is, here you are doing it again, with this very post.
